Context
The Maldives is a Muslim country, and local islands are home to Maldivian communities. These rules apply on inhabited islands. Resorts are different.
The key rules
- Swimwear: wear bikinis and swimwear only on designated tourist beaches ("bikini beaches") and on excursions.
- Dress: in the village, cover your shoulders and knees. Men shouldn't go shirtless.
- Alcohol: alcohol isn't sold on local islands, and you can't bring it into the country. Some visitors take a day trip to a resort or a licensed liveaboard boat for a drink.
- Pork isn't served on local islands.
- Fridays: businesses close around midday prayers, and many public ferries don't run.
- Ramadan: eat and drink discreetly in public during the day.
- Drones: you may need a permit. Check before you fly one.
